  1. Virtual Paralegals

Find out what a virtual paralegal is and what they can do for you.

Q.1 What is a virtual paralegal?

A virtual paralegal is a person qualified by education, training or work experience who works under the direction of a lawyer, law office, corporation, governmental agency or other entity who performs specifically delegated substantive legal work for which a lawyer is responsible. The virtual paralegal performs such work from a fully equipped office on a contract basis.

Q.2 Are other attorneys hiring virtual paralegals?

Absolutely! Yes!!! I challenge you to do your own research on this topic.

Q.3 Is a virtual paralegal an employee?

A virtual paralegal is an independent business owner. Your virtual paralegal is not an employee, but a business consultant with whom you have an ongoing, collaborative relationship.

Q.4 What can a virtual paralegal do for me?

Virtual paralegals typically work from a fully equipped home office, performing the same tasks your on-site employed paralegal performs. All project assignments and requests for service are communicated via telephone, internet, email, fax, US mail, and overnight delivery – whatever method you desire.

Q.5 Who is the typical virtual paralegal?

Virtual paralegals are highly skilled professionals who contract their services to multiple attorneys (lawyers, law offices, corporations, government agencies, or other entity). Unlike temporary employees, virtual paralegals are entrepreneurs. They perform their services from a remote location. Information and files are often exchanged or shared via the internet.

  2. Ethics

Wonder if you're information is secure?

Q.1 What about security, confidentiality and conflicts of interest?

The security and confidentiality of your projects are our first priority. After 15 years in a law office, our owner understands the ethical consequences. This is a professional responsibility. Digital Paralegal continually reviews new technology to assure that our methods will meet these requirements. Should you see anything in our processes which concerns you, please bring it to our attention. Before work begins on each project, Digital Paralegal will perform an internal conflict of interest check. If a conflict is found, you will be notified immediately and the project will be declined. We will then refer you to another virtual assistant for that project. See my Privacy and Ethics policy for more information.

Q.2 How does the technology work to accomplish the exchange of files and information?

We will work with you to accomplish the exchange of information in a manner which meets your confidentiality and security concerns.

    • Email. We can communicate with each other and exchange information through email.
    • Fax Transmission. You can use our toll-free line to fax your handwritten notes, revisions, or other documents from any location.
    • U.S. Mail (commonly referred to as “snail mail”) or Federal Express. You may ship documents to our office using these traditional methods, and we will be happy to ship to your office, at your direction.
    • Internet exchange via secure server. Most attorneys are familiar with attaching a document to an email. However, sometimes a different procedure is preferable for security reasons. The court systems follow a different procedure when an attorney electronically files a pleading. That document changes hands via a secure server. A number of private companies now offer secure servers to the public for collaborative project management. After discussing these options with you to your satisfaction, you will be assigned a user name and password. Don’t worry, it’s an easy process. Just go to the web site you are provided and log in. Documents are uploaded simply by choosing the document location from your own computer.
    • Remote access to your computer network. Sometimes the nature of the project or the most efficient way to accomplish the work can be to grant your virtual paralegal remote access to your computer network. Virtual paralegals often use internet-based services such as GoToMyPC or LogMeIn to provide this capability. The programs provide a secure and remote method of accessing work and transferring data.

Q.3 How do you receive my dictation?

We will discuss your current dictation system. If you have not yet converted from analog tapes to digital dictation, we can assist you in that process. We can also make arrangements for you to use a dial-in dictation system. You simply email the digital dictation file or upload it to the secure server.

  3. Advantages & Getting Started

Not sure what the advantages are in working with a virtual paralegal? Find out here and get started today.

Q.1 What are the advantages of working with a virtual paralegal?

It will save you money! You will NOT pay for the following: office space, computer equipment, office supplies, payroll taxes, insurance benefits, holiday pay, vacation pay, sick leave, personal time, personal phone calls, coffee breaks, office birthday parties, or lost productivity from office meetings.
